As organisers of the Red Kite Challenge, we are proud to announce that the 2023 edition of the race raised over £6,000 for the Chemotherapy Day Unit and Ystwyth Ward at Bronglais Hospital.
The Red Kite Race is an annual trail running and walking festival, held in and around Devil’s Bridge, in Aberystwyth. It is known as one of the toughest and most challenging trail races in Wales.
The 2023 edition of the race took place on 28 April and was a hugely successful event with record entries and some fantastic racing during the day.
Attracting top class trail runners to mid Wales is an important aim of the Red Kite Challenge, but just as important is the effort to raise funds towards the local Bronglais hospital.
“Fundraising went really well, although it was a challenging project” explained Owain Schiavone, a member of the organising committee.
“Organising any event is a challenge, and the Red Kite Challenge is a prestigious event in the sporting and athletics calendar, on top of being a fundraising event.
“On top of this, there are many costs associated with holding an event like this so we had to call in many favours and find corporate sponsors to cover these and ensure as much money as possible was reaching the charity.
“As a committee, we are all very proud of our achievements. Not only in terms of raising valuable funds, but also in terms of raising awareness of the good work being done by the NHS and the need for constant support from communities to help maintain the efforts.
“We would like to thank all the volunteers involved in marshalling the event, the landowners who allowed the race to pass through their land, our event sponsors, the media who gave us attention, the athletics associations and everyone who helped in any way, shape or form. Big thank you of course to all members of the committee who worked so hard on the project.”
Bridget Harpwood, Fundraising Officer, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said that the support of communities is key to the work they do.
“Thank you to the Red Kite Race organisers for kindly supporting the Chemotherapy Day Unit and Ystwyth Ward at Bronglais Hospital and for raising such a fantastic amount” said Bridget.
“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
We were glad that race founder and Honorary President, Dic Evans, was able to present the cheque to the hospital along with other members of the committee. Having suffered a stroke in December 2022, Dic has seen first hand the good work being done in Ystwyth Ward, and knows how important it is to raise valuable funds.

Mae trefnwyr Ras y Barcud Coch wedi codi dros £6,000 ar gyfer Uned Ddydd Cemotherapi a Ward Ystwyth yn Ysbyty Bronglais.
Mae Ras y Barcud Coch yn ddigwyddiad rhedeg a cherdded blynyddol, a gynhelir ym Mhontarfynach a’r cyffiniau, yn Aberystwyth. Mae’n cael ei hadnabod fel un o’r rasys llwybr caletaf a mwyaf heriol yng Nghymru.
Cynhaliwyd y ras ar 28 Ebrill 2023.
Dywedodd Owain Schiavone, aelod o’r pwyllgor trefnu: “Aeth y codi arian yn dda iawn, er ei fod yn brosiect heriol. Mae trefnu unrhyw ddigwyddiad yn her, ac mae Her y Barcud Coch yn ddigwyddiad mawr yn y calendr chwaraeon ac athletau, ar ben bod yn ddigwyddiad codi arian.
“Ar ben hyn, mae yna lawer o gostau yn gysylltiedig â chynnal digwyddiad fel hwn felly
bu’n rhaid galw llawer o ffafrau a dod o hyd i noddwyr corfforaethol i dalu am y rhain a sicrhau bod cymaint o arian â phosibl yn cyrraedd yr elusen.
“Fel pwyllgor, rydyn ni i gyd yn falch iawn o’n cyflawniadau. Nid yn unig o ran codi arian gwerthfawr, ond hefyd o ran codi ymwybyddiaeth o’r gwaith da sy’n cael ei wneud gan y GIG a’r angen am gefnogaeth gyson gan gymunedau i helpu i gynnal yr ymdrechion.
“Hoffem ddiolch i’r holl wirfoddolwyr a fu’n rhan o drefnu’r digwyddiad, y tirfeddianwyr a ganiataodd i’r ras basio trwy eu tir, ein noddwyr digwyddiad, y cyfryngau a roddodd sylw i ni, y cymdeithasau athletau a phawb a helpodd mewn unrhyw ffordd. Diolch yn fawr wrth gwrs i holl aelodau’r pwyllgor a weithiodd mor galed ar y prosiect.”
Dywedodd Bridget Harpwood, Swyddog Codi Arian, elusen swyddogol Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda: “Diolch i drefnwyr Ras y Barcud Coch am gefnogi’r Uned Ddydd Cemotherapi a Ward Ystwyth yn Ysbyty Bronglais ac am godi swm mor wych.
